The essential oils and aromatic substances most often associated with the Bible include frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, cedarwood, spikenard, hyssop, cassia, aloes, cypress, galbanum, rose of Sharon, and calamus. These oils and plants were important in biblical life and were used in holy anointing oil, incense, worship, cleansing rituals, burial practices, perfume, and daily life.
Among them, frankincense and myrrh are especially well known because of their strong biblical symbolism and their connection to Jesus’ birth and burial. Cinnamon, cassia, and calamus were included in sacred anointing oil, while hyssop was associated with purification and cleansing. Spikenard was used to anoint Jesus, and cedarwood, cypress, galbanum, and aloes also appear in Scripture in connection with building, worship, fragrance, and ceremony. Together, these oils and plants are often seen as some of the most significant biblical oils because of both their practical uses and their spiritual meaning.
